Drive™ for Pre-Teens
|
Because attitudes and behaviors begin to develop at a young age, it is critical that pre-teens start to form a safe driver attitude long before they get their permits.
Drive™ for Pre-Teens began by working with teenagers involved in ‘peer education’ – Teens teaching pre-teens a variety of subjects and concepts. Teens are much closer to the world of pre-teens: Indeed, they are not that far removed! The goal is to provide an interactive, participatory program using Ownership Learning™ that allows pre-teens to come to their own conclusions about driving attitudes. It can be taught by both teachers and teenagers to students in middle schools and junior high schools. Drive for Pre-Teens can also be used outside the classroom.
The program also involves the parents, who become responsible for their own driving behavior. Pre-teens in effect help their parents develop into positive role models they will want to emulate.
Drive for Pre-Teens is currently in development. The present plan is to roll it out in Hawaii in 2007, with some prior testing in schools.
